Generation 9 Ubers — Singles Format Reference
Gen 9 Ubers hosts every Pokémon banned from OU plus the Restricted Legendaries — Calyrex-Shadow, Miraidon, Koraidon, Terapagos. Multiple Restricted per team are permitted, producing offensive cores no other Singles tier matches.

At a glance
Ubers is the highest-power Smogon Singles format. The Restricted Legendary roster is fully legal — Calyrex-Shadow, Miraidon, Koraidon, Terapagos, every box legendary across the franchise — and the format is balanced through clauses rather than tight banlist policing.
Above Ubers sits Anything Goes (AG), reserved for Pokémon too uncompetitive even for Ubers — historically Mega Rayquaza, currently a small list of engine-specific edge cases. Below sits OU, where the Restricted Legendaries are banned outright.

Format rules
Ubers applies the standard Smogon Singles clauses. The defining rule difference from OU is the absence of Restricted Legendary bans — Ubers IS where the Restricted Pokémon live.
| Clause | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sleep Clause | Only one opposing Pokémon may be put to sleep at a time. |
| Species Clause | Each team can only carry one of any given species. |
| Evasion Clause | Evasion-boosting moves and abilities are banned. |
| OHKO Clause | Sheer Cold, Fissure, Horn Drill, Guillotine are banned. |
| Endless Battle Clause | Battle states that cannot end are forbidden. |
| Moody Clause | Moody is banned outright. |
| Restricted slot | MULTIPLE Restricted Legendaries per team permitted. |
| Tera | LEGAL — once per team, per battle. |
Anything Goes vs Ubers
Ubers is balanced through clauses; Anything Goes (AG) is the format above it for Pokémon that even Ubers cannot absorb. The split is the franchise's structural answer to "what if a Pokémon is too broken for the high-power format."
Anything Goes (AG)
AG sits above Ubers and hosts engine-specific edge cases — Pokémon whose interactions break the Ubers format itself. Historically Mega Rayquaza was AG's defining resident; in Gen 9 the AG list is smaller and mostly handles legacy interactions through HOME. Most players will never need to engage with AG; Ubers is the highest-power format competitive Singles tournaments engage with.
Pokémon banned to AG (above Ubers)
- The list is small in Gen 9 and shifts with HOME-introduced Pokémon. Refer to Smogon's tier page for the canonical current list.
What Ubers itself bans
- Standard clauses (Sleep, Species, Evasion, OHKO, Endless Battle, Moody) apply.
- No format-specific Pokémon bans beyond AG-resident exclusions.

Calyrex-Shadow: 100/85/80/165/100/150. Astral Barrage spread + Grim Neigh stat-snowball ability + Specs / Calm Mind variants. The most-used Pokémon in Gen 9 Ubers — the format's offensive cornerstone.

Team roles in Ubers
Ubers team-building inherits the seven structural roles from OU but with the Restricted slot replacing the cornerstone wallbreaker.
One or two Restricted Legendaries per team. The choice defines the team's offensive ceiling and structural archetype.
Ubers hazard control: Iron Treads (Rapid Spin), Great Tusk (Rapid Spin), Defog less common due to Good as Gold concerns.
Speed control through Choice Scarf Restricted (Calyrex-Shadow Scarf), priority via Eternatus Priority Sleep Talk niche, or Tera-Speed boosts.
Miraidon Volt Switch in Electric Terrain, Tornadus-Therian U-turn (when Restricted-eligible — note Sub-Legendary status check).
Ubers wallbreakers: Specs Calyrex-Shadow, Specs Eternatus, Specs Reshiram, Banded Zacian-Crowned.
Defining Ubers wincons: Calm Mind Calyrex-Shadow, Calm Mind Terapagos, Bulk Up Koraidon, Iron Defense Necrozma-Dusk-Mane.
What makes Ubers different
Ubers is the highest-power Smogon Singles format. Restricted Legendaries are not the offensive ceiling — Calyrex-Shadow + Tera + Booster Energy partner is.

Power ceiling
Highest in any Smogon Singles tier
- Multiple Restricted permitted — unlike VGC which caps at 0/1/2, Ubers has no Restricted-slot limit. Two-Restricted cores are common.
- Tera amplifies Restricted — Tera Type flips on Restricted Legendaries produce one-shot win conditions no other format reproduces.
- Smaller community than OU — Ubers is actively played but the player pool is smaller than OU. Tournaments are dedicated.
- Anything Goes above — for engine-specific edge cases that even Ubers cannot absorb. AG is rarely engaged with at the player level.
How to get started
Ubers requires a different mindset from OU. Restricted Legendaries are central; the format's skill ceiling lives in Restricted-on-Restricted matchups.
- Read Smogon's Ubers tier page — banlist + AG list canonical.
- Choose your Restricted core — Calyrex-Shadow + Miraidon is the most-played starting point.
- Pick the Tera target — usually a Restricted. Tera flips on Calyrex-Shadow are particularly impactful.
- Build the support core — hazard control, speed control, redirection answers.
- Ladder Pokémon Showdown — Gen 9 Ubers has an active ladder. Ubers tournaments run continuously.
